A Peek Behind the Curtain

image_spgouhAs a Christian man I try and stay as far away from sin as possible.  I try my best to keep myself out of temptation’s way, but there seems to be one particular area of sin that is harder to avoid than other areas.  Obviously, I am referring to lust.  It is no mystery that men are sight oriented.  That makes it difficult for us to avoid the temptation of lust when we see a scantily dressed woman.  Actually difficult is an extreme understatement.  It is an outright battle!  I have never met a Christian man that says he has no problem with the temptation to look at women improperly.  I believe that it is Satan’s temptation of choice when trying to win the souls of men.

Being a Christian means that I promised God I would turn away from sin of every kind.  So, knowing my weaknesses as a man, I take every effort to remove temptation from my life.  I don’t allow myself to watch movies or TV shows with poorly dressed women in them.  I have my wife go through the magazines I read first and tear out the advertisements that have immodestly dressed women in them.  I am extremely careful when on the internet.  But, there is one temptation of lust that I cannot keep entirely away from me: women who insist on wearing revealing clothes in public.  I can’t avoid them.  They are literally everywhere.  And when I say everywhere, I am including the church.  Yes, even some members of Christ’s church dress this way.

So, how does God want women to dress?  God tells us “Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments” (1 Timothy 2:9).  Why does God intend for women to dress modestly and discreetly?  I think it is because he knows how the minds of men work.  When a man sees a woman who has revealed too much, he automatically is faced with the temptation of lust.  Satan wants us to see these women and allow our minds to go to dark and evil places and we all know that the devil is very good at what he does.  It is important for women to understand that whenever you put on immodest clothing you are opening an avenue of sin for a man.  Satan has used you as his tool to bring men a step further away from God.

image_k2txsgYou probably need a deeper look into the mind of a man to understand this concept better.  As you have probably have already noticed, men don’t think the same way women do.  Therefore, your reasons for wearing improper clothing and our reasons for looking at them are entirely different.  Some women say they choose low rise jeans, short skirts, and low cut shirts are for fashion.  Know this, any man that is staring at you when wearing these things is not appreciating how well put together you outfit is.  He is sinning.  What most women think is innocent fashion, causes men to stumble.  The strongest Christian men are still so strongly tempted by the sight of too much skin.  We do not have the ability to look upon a women dressed this way and simply appreciate her beauty.  No, it goes to a much darker more perverted place.  Think about the problems that arose for David when he lusted after Bathsheba.  He didn’t simply want to look at her.  When he allowed himself to look at her it produced lust.  Lust then conceived to sin by him sleeping with her.  We know that lying, deceitfulness, and even murder of Bathsheba’s husband followed.  Bathsheba wasn’t responsible for David’s actions, but you can see just what a man, even a man after God’s own heart, is tempted to do when he sees a woman with too little coverage.

In Matthew, Jesus says, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; but I say to you, that everyone who looks on a woman to lust for her has committed adultery with her already in his heart” (5:27-28).  I want to open the eyes of women to see just what kind of struggle men go through.  Christ tells us that looking at women improperly is adultery of the heart.  Satan is already winning this battle with a lot of men.  Please don’t help him.  It is a sin for women to dress immodestly because it causes men to sin.

I don’t think that it is the intentions of any Christian woman to pull Christian men away from God, but that is exactly what is happening when women choose to show off their bodies.  Romans 12:1 teaches: “I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.”  God wants us to use our bodies for him, but they belong to Satan if you use them to entice others to sin.

My intention for this article is to try to give women a peek behind the curtain into a man’s mind, but I can’t even begin to explain what a fight lust is for us.  All that I can hope for is that you would understand that this is the toughest temptation for a man to battle.  We need your help.  The outfit you put on today could cause men to stumble and sin, marriage relationships to be scared or broken, and ultimately could cause souls to fall away from Christ.
