Storing Up Treasures

image_s8iiw8At a girl’s devotional with the college group from my church, one of the girls did a lesson about where we are storing our treasures.  We looked at Matthew 6:19-21 and read where Jesus talks about not laying up our treasures on earth where they will be destroyed, but rather laying them up in heaven where they will be forever.  I really started to think about my life and what I put my importance in.  The things that are most important to me are ultimately the things that I am storing my treasures in.

I sit and think about this now, and I’m constantly distracted by everything going on around me at school.  This past month has kept me running everywhere and staying so busy with everything.  I know all of you, too, are probably very busy with school and friends and all the activities that those include.  But even with as much as we all have going on, I really, really encourage you to think about where your treasures are each day.  Think about what you spend your days doing.  If you lost everything you had here on earth, would you still be rich with God?

Living as humans, so many things can go wrong.  We lose friends, family members pass away, school goes badly, we get things stolen, relationships are broken, and so many other things.  Some things really hurt us and they can leave us feeling really empty at those times in our lives.  The thing is, as Christians, the thing that makes this different for us is the fact that we have God.  He is always there and will never hurt us.  If we are living in Him and storing up our treasures in Heaven, then we will never be without anything. If we value things here on earth, and then we lose them, we are left with nothing. But if we are storing up treasures in heaven, God keeps that in store for us and no matter what happens here, we will always have something and never be empty.

In Philippians 4:11-13, Paul says, “I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”  Although we go through many hardships in life, ALWAYS remember that this world is not our home.  Everyone and everything we see around us will not be here forever.  Only one thing will be here forever and that is our Lord and the home that He is preparing for us.  Doesn’t it seem crazy that we spend so much time storing up treasures here when they will only last for a blink of an eye, and then we neglect storing up treasures for our home that we will be in forever?  God has to be the one that is in control in our lives.  He knows what is best for us and we need to put that faith in Him and trust Him to lead us and take care of us.

I encourage each one of you girls to think about what you can do each day you wake up to store up some treasures for your heavenly home.  I want all of us to spend eternity together, and I know that I don’t want to see any of these temporary earthly things to get in the way of that. (: I know I have many treasures that I need to store up in the place that matters.  I love all of you and I pray that God is working in you daily.  Let Him use you and stay focused!  I know it’s a busy time right now, but stay in His word and it will do more for you than you could ever imagine!
