From the moment our hearts first beat, we are alive. Aside from humans, there are hundreds of thousands of different types of living organisms on the Earth: animals, plants, fish, even algae. Life is as beautiful and wonderful as it is mysterious. When He created the world, God gave life. He breathed life into the world. (Gen. 1-2)
We live our Earthly lives and get to experience amazing things: love, laughter, happiness, adventure, excitement. But with the good comes the bad and we also experience things like: loss, devastation, emptiness, sickness.
Our lives aren’t perfect, just as we are not perfect. Man and woman, though created in God’s image (Gen. 1:26-27) have never been perfect. From the time Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit through their disobedience, death was introduced as well as life. In this life we will all experience a physical death, yes, but in the next we have the opportunity to live eternally with God our Father or to die a final, spiritual death.
It may sound rather harsh to be put that way, but it doesn’t make it any less true. The question is: how can we have life eternal? There is but one answer and He came in human form. Life is…
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” – John 14:6
“God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.” – 1 John 5:11
“I am the bread of life.” – John 6:35
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12
God’s word tells us that Jesus is life and in Him is the way to life. He gave His life on Earth so that we may also have life forever. His life He freely gave, but that does not mean we can have it without some action on our part. We must believe in Jesus and give Him our love. We must believe God sent His Son to die for us and because of that belief, we must live our Earthly lives glorifying and honoring Him. We must live in a way that others may see the light shining in us and know it is from God and give glory to Him also (Matt. 5:16). We must live a righteous life, ever striving to be called a worthy servant of God.
“Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” – 1 John 5:12
“I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.” – John 6:47
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” – Matthew 22:37
“For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.” 1 John 5:3
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” – Luke 9:23
“And this is the promise that He made to us- eternal life.” 1 John 2:25
And it doesn’t stop with loving and believing in God and His Son, though that is the root of a right relationship with Him. We must also die to sin and be raised again as a new creation in Christ.
“I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” – John 3:5
“Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” – Mark 16:16
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
Jesus is life. There is no life without Him. Living a life following Him is the only way we can have eternal life.
“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” – Phil. 1:21
